Pot Spotlight: The Straight Up

The Straight Up Pot is a crowd favourite for a reason! As a member of the Willow Range, it’s made from a lightweight composite blend of materials, making it extremely tough, weather-resistant, and watertight. With a smooth and sleek matte finish, the Willow Range is available in three colours, and each pot features two drainage holes.

A contemporary take on a classic shape, this pot comes in four different sizes, ranging from 300mm in diameter and height to 600mm. The Straight Up is suitable for almost any space, from balconies and veranda decks to interior corner spaces and sofa ends. This versatile pot can make a bold statement or seamlessly complement its surroundings with confidence and ease.

There are a few easy ways to style the Straight Up Pot. First, decide whether you want the pots to be the focus of the space or to complement existing features. Next, consider if you prefer the pots to be uniform or a mix-and-match set. Lastly, take into account the size of the pots when choosing your plants.

The Straight Up Pots as Features of the Space:

Colour contrast is a simple way of pushing the pots towards the eye and making them the prominent feature of the space. The Concrete Grey or Charcoal Straight Up Pots create an illusion of depth, while the white pots against heavier, darker colours create a sense of light and space.

Another way to feature the pots is by placement. The Straight Up pots are perfect for filling corner spaces or clustering against bare walls, capturing attention when nothing else draws the eye.

The Straight Up Pots as Extensions of the Space:

Draw on aspects of your garden or home that are already present, such as black metal window frames or the white tones of your lamp shades or furniture frames.

Matching these with one of the three available colours in the Straight Up Pots creates aesthetic cohesion and balance, giving the illusion that the pots are extensions of the existing architecture or landscaping.

If you don’t have a focal colour to draw from, match the main colour scheme of your walls, garden fencing, or paving with the Straight Up Pots. This will blend the pots into the space for a seamless, soft look that enhances the beauty of your plants, bringing them to the forefront.

Straight Up Pots Are Easy to Mix and Match:

Due to the Straight Up pot’s straight walls and rounded bottom, it can easily be mixed and matched with other shapes and sizes.

Clustering pots is a great way to add volume and depth to the space, especially when kept in one colour. Height differentiation is the key to creating an aesthetically pleasing pot formation.

The Straight Up Pots are specifically designed to achieve this with each size pot having exactly 100mm variance between one size to the next.

Suitable Plants for the Straight Up Pots:

Choosing the right plants for your Straight Up pots can be challenging. It’s important to consider the size of the pots in relation to the growth potential of the plant. For example, a Straight Up pot with a 300mm diameter is generally not suitable for a dwarf lemon tree, as these trees can grow beyond 1.5 metres. Conversely, a 20cm Strelitzia Bird of Paradise would be too small for a 600mm diameter Straight Up Pot. This mismatch not only potentially harms the plant’s health but also doesn't look aesthetically pleasing.

As a general rule, the plant’s root ball should be approximately 7-10cm smaller and narrower than the pot walls. This allows for comfortable root expansion without overwhelming the plant with too much space. Below is a guide to help determine suitable plant sizes but keep in mind that plants may grow larger or even fast depending on the time of year and health:
