Bring Your Pots to Life: A Step-by-Step Planting Guide

You've got the pots ready—now it's time to bring them to life! Potting plants is simple when you have the right essentials: pots, plants, high-quality potting mix, drainage materials, and a good fertiliser. Follow these easy steps to create stunning potted plants that will thrive and enhance your space.

What You'll Need

  • Pots
  • Plants
  • High-quality potting mix
  • Drainage screen (or similar material)
  • Pot feet (optional but recommended)
  • Fertiliser
  • Gardening tools (hand trowel, watering can, potting mat, etc.)

Step 1: Ensure Proper Drainage

Start by placing a drainage screen over the pot’s drainage holes. This simple step prevents larger soil particles from clogging the holes, ensuring water drains freely and keeps your plants healthy. Proper drainage is essential for preventing root rot. Avoid using materials like geo fabric, silt mesh, or weed mat, which can hold too much moisture and cause drainage issues.

Step 2: Elevate for Better Drainage

Position your pots on pot feet to allow water to drain more effectively from the base, keeping the roots healthy. Pot feet also prevent water rings or stains on surfaces by lifting the pot slightly off the ground, ensuring proper airflow and drainage underneath.

Step 3: Use Premium Potting Mix

Fill the pot with premium potting mix, lightly packing it to create a stable base for your plants. No need for gravel at the bottom—high-quality potting mix provides excellent drainage while maximizing soil space for your plants' roots. Avoid garden soil, which retains too much moisture and may lead to waterlogging.

Step 4: Plant with Care

Gently remove your plant from its nursery pot. Place it in the new pot, ensuring the potting mix level matches the plant's existing soil line. Keep the plant's stem or crown exposed. Water the pot immediately after planting to settle the soil. Add more potting mix if the soil settles too much after watering.

Step 5: Nourish for Long-Term Growth

Kickstart your plants' growth with a boost of nutrients. Dilute our organic Liquid Plant Food in water for a quick nutrient supply. Alternatively, opt for our Slow-Release Garden Booster for continuous nourishment over several months.
