As our renovation comes to an end I wanted to share 3 things I’ve learned from this experience. As a young couple in Sydney we were very blessed to be able to purchase a slice of the Sydney property Market. With my Husband a Landscaper/Builder by trade and me an Interior Designer we purchased a home that needed fixing up, a home that we could make our own and put our stamp on.
1. One of the most important things before embarking on a renovation is to get familiar with your home especially if you have only just purchased it. I would suggest living in the home for at least 6 – 12 months so you can get a feel for the place. Get familiar with the orientation of your home and exactly where the sun rises and sets and where the sun will be positioned on a hot day. The more intimate you can be with understanding your home, the better the outcome will be.
2. Evaluate if this is going to be your forever home, or is this just a stepping stone to your next home. Always keep this into consideration when selecting materials as you want to keep your choices consistent and something that people across the board will like.
3. If you don’t have the luxury of renting while renovating like ourselves forget about keeping the house clean as you will drive yourself mad! I am very OCD and like to keep my home immaculate but this is near impossible when renovating, especially when you are working with an older property and there is demo involved as the dust will cover every surface of your home, even if you keep the doors closed. I learnt this; the hard way and now after a year of renovating have given up for my own sanity and accepted the dusty surfaces and gritty floors.
